The best pop mashups of 2012… So far

One of my favourite things about hitting the end of any year is the year-in-review style music mashups.

They’re coming a little early this year, and while we’re still waiting on DJ Earworm’s anticipated United State of Pop 2012 round up, these are still good offerings.

Two reasons to love Lucy Spraggan

Lucy Spraggan

Lucy Spraggan is a 21-year-old singer-songwriter from Yorkshire who is about to become your new musical obsession.

She’s hit The X Factor UK like a breath of fresh air, winning hearts when she sings her own songs, losing them when she sings other people’s.

Her initial audition, singing Last Night, a humorous ode to drinking too much, saw her go through to the next round.

Her next original song was Tea and Toast and came during the bootcamp round.

Now she’s through to the finals – and you know who I’m hoping will see it through!

Win tix to Pitch Perfect

There’s a hot wee movie about to hit cinemas called Pitch Perfect, starring some of my favourite people, including the divine miss Rebel Wilson. Singing. And dancing. And bitching.

Trailer:

The Riff Off

And the MTV lip dub:

Anywho I have somehow found myself with a cinema to fill with people, so want to come to a preview? YEAH YA DO!

It’s next Thursday night, in central Auckland. If I draw your name, I’ll email you the details. Just leave me a comment telling me a fun fact about Rebel Wilson. I’ll draw it on Monday the 24th at 8pm. Boom!

Pitch Perfect will be in NZ cinemas on September 29. Big ups to Paramount for the tickets!

Video through time

Awesome video alert time! Here’s 32-year-old film-maker Jeremiah McDonald talking to his 12-year-old self via video.

“Look at you!” cries McDonald jr, burping.

“Charming,” the elder says. “No wonder I’m single.”

Enjoy!

Where the hell is Matt?

There’s nothing like a video of people doing crazy dancing across the globe to remind you that we’re actually all just human beings.

According to his website, Matt is a 35-year-old “deadbeat from Connecticut” who’s friend started taking video while Matt danced. Badly. In Hanoi. The video viralled, Matt got a sponsor, and all of a sudden, he’s making videos of his dancing all across the world.

The original now has almost 3 million views

And then he repeated the experience in 2006.

Now, 2012, and there’s a brand new Where The Hell Is Matt? for us to enjoy.

The best of the ‘Call Me Maybe’ meme

If you haven’t heard Carly Rae Jepsen’s catchy song Call Me Maybe, where have you been? This song has been played and parodied all over the place. Please stop listening to sad.fm and hanging out on boring websites, and check out the original track here.

For the rest of you, here’s a compilation of the best videos, rage comics and meme pieces floating across the interwebs. Please add your favourites in the comments!

How much fun are Jimmy Fallon and The Roots having with Carly on this cover?

You know it’s blown up when ObamaDubs gets amongst.

The powercut version: With all your favourite internet stars like Keenan Cahill and Sam Tsui, pop stars Katy Perry, Jesse J and Justin Bieber, and actor James Franco:

And some statics to enjoy:

Just in case you’re bored, have nothing better to do, or are looking to fill in 10 minutes of your day… Here’s an addictive game that’s a twist on the spacies you use to play as a kid. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Ouka’s Amazing Ring Art

Ouka is a Japanese artist who performs amazing acts with rings. He will make you suspend your belief in gravity, and the fact he only has two hands.

While performing across Japan and France, his first YouTube clip reached a million views quickly – a feat my google translator tells me he’s very proud of. You can check out Ouka’s site here, but be warned – it’s all in Japanese!

Meanwhile, check out his performances – they are rad.
