How to get your Facebook page deleted without even trying

Recently popular burger company Velvet Burger had their Facebook page deleted without warning.

Facebook have quietly updated their page terms, and if you have a brand page, you’re bound by them. Here’s some of the more unexpected ones, or ones we know people have had pages, posts or images removed for:

  1. Your page name can’t be in capitals – except for acronyms.
  2. Your page name can’t include “superfluous descriptions”.
  3. Your cover can’t have price or purchase information, can’t have contact information like a website, can’t have calls to action like “tell your friends”
  4. You can’t encourage your fans to use your cover image on their personal timelines.
  5. Competitions can’t be done by commenting, sharing or uploading to your wall. (see Velvet Burger…), but MUST be done via an application tab.
  6. Pages must not contain content that is hateful, threatening, defamatory, pornographic, incites violence or contains nudity.

The best thing you can do is read the rules. Check to see if they’ve been updated at least once a month, and don’t try to be sneaky and cheat your way around them – all it takes is one complaint and your page could be goneburger.

  1. There are so many companies who are either unaware of or blatently breaking the Facebook competition rules and hoping not to be caught. Off the top of my head I can think of two:

https://www.facebook.com/MrRentalNZ (like us for a chance to win a house cleaner for a year)

and https://www.facebook.com/pages/United-Sweets-of-New-Zealand (who either get you to share an image or like their post)

I think maybe in the latter case it is because it’s a small company who run competitions daily and cannot afford to pay for a third party app?

  2. I’m not in the least surprised. Facebook will uphold anyone’s right to free speech as long as it agrees with them, hence we can have stalkers, pedophiles and loonies, but we can’t have anyone doing honest business there.

    1. I (along with others) posted on their wall…the one conversation they did not delete they did acknowledge they weren’t aware and I pointed them to the rules. My feed has been blissfully clog free since them and I feel a little more kindly. I did read a big backlash about their spam though. FB do need to more obvious in their rules but I can understand why they make them.

  3. So strange for such a commercial organisation to be so anti commercial! I guess they want to stop face book looking like the strip in Vegas

  4. Blogs like this help shoot blanks across the bow! Thanks for the heads up all third party apps now introduced as of May onwards and page is officially unshutadownable! Keep it up 🙂
